We’ve gathered the most common questions from apprentices and trainees so you can find the answers you need quickly.
Starting out in the trades?
Here’s what you need to know before you begin — from how to apply to what to expect in your first few weeks.
You can apply directly through our JobSite by browsing available apprenticeship opportunities and submitting your application online. If you’re unsure which trade suits you best, start with our Trade Matcher Quiz to explore your options.
No — most apprentices start with little to no experience. What matters is your attitude, willingness to learn, and reliability.
Most apprentices start after leaving school, but there’s no upper age limit. If you’re ready to train and work full-time, you can start an apprenticeship.
Yes. Programmes like Gateway or pre-trade courses let you experience a trade while finishing school.
You’ll usually start with basic tools, but your employer will guide you on what’s required. Many workplaces provide tools early on and expect you to build your kit over time.
Already on the tools?
This section covers everything about day-to-day life as an apprentice — how training works, what support you’ll get, and how to stay on track.
Most apprenticeships take 3–4 years, depending on the trade, your progress, and how much experience you bring.
Yes. You’ll earn a wage while you learn, and your pay increases as you gain skills and experience.
EarnLearn works with your employer and training provider to manage your learning progress and assessments. You’ll have a dedicated EarnLearn Training Advisor who supports you throughout your apprenticeship.
You’ll record your work and learning progress through our online system. Your Training Advisor will explain how to use it when you start.
Reach out to your Training Advisor early — they’re here to help. We can organise extra support, mentoring, or study resources if needed.
Working towards your qualification?
Here’s how your training, assessments, and credits work — plus what happens if your situation changes during your apprenticeship.
You’ll work towards a nationally recognised New Zealand Certificate in your chosen trade (for example, Plumbing, Gasfitting, or Electrical Engineering).
Assessments combine on-the-job competency checks and theory work. You’ll be assessed by qualified assessors or your Training Advisor.
Yes, if you’ve already completed relevant units or have practical experience, we’ll assess it and apply credits where possible.
You can transfer your apprenticeship agreement to a new employer. Just contact your Training Advisor so we can help with the paperwork.
Need a bit of extra help?
Everyone hits challenges along the way — whether it’s learning support or personal issues. We’re here to make sure you’re not doing it alone.
Yes. We provide literacy and numeracy support, learning resources, and study advice. If you have specific learning needs, let your Training Advisor know.
We understand that life happens. Talk to your Training Advisor — we can connect you with wellbeing or financial support services.
Yes, it’s possible to pause your training for a period due to personal, medical, or family reasons. You’ll need to discuss this with your employer and EarnLearn.
Curious about wages and work rights?
Find out how pay works, what benefits you’re entitled to, and what to do if something doesn’t feel right at work.
You’re employed by your workplace, so your employer pays your wages. EarnLearn oversees your training but doesn’t employ you directly.
Yes. As an employee, you’re entitled to all standard employment rights, including paid holidays, sick leave, and public holidays.
Contact your Training Advisor immediately — we can help mediate and ensure your rights and training are protected.
Safety first — always.
This section covers your responsibilities, required safety training, and what to do if an accident happens on site.
Yes. Health and safety training is essential and usually part of your first modules. Your employer will also provide site-specific inductions.
Report it straight away to your employer and Training Advisor. You’ll need to complete an incident form, and we’ll ensure proper follow-up and ACC support if required.
Getting qualified is just the start.
Learn what happens when you finish your apprenticeship and how to keep building your career in the trades.
Once you’ve completed all your practical and theory requirements, your Training Advisor will confirm your completion and organise your qualification certificate.
You’ll become a qualified tradesperson — and from there, you can continue to advanced qualifications, start your own business, or become a licensed supervisor.
Absolutely. We love seeing our graduates succeed. You can join our alumni network for ongoing professional development and job opportunities.
