We’re committed to delivering high-quality training and fair, consistent assessment against national standards for every EarnLearn learner. On this page you’ll find information about how assessment works, who our assessors are, how to become one, and the support available.
Assessment involves collecting and recording evidence that shows a learner’s competence against the unit standards they are working to achieve.
EarnLearn works with industries to develop learning and assessment material based on a collection-of-evidence model.
Our Quality Assurance team monitors the quality of assessment and supports assessors across the industries we serve.
EarnLearn assessors are qualified, industry-experienced experts who work with learners to ensure their skills, experience, and hard work are recognised in line with NZQA requirements.
All assessors are registered with EarnLearn and hold unit standard 4098 (Use standards to assess apprentice performance). EarnLearn is accredited to offer 4098 Assessor Training courses. Most assessors are registered with EarnLearn as either contract or workplace assessors:
Contract Assessors are independent assessors engaged by EarnLearn.
Workplace Assessors are based in the workplace and usually employed by the organisation they assess for.
To ensure all registered assessors have sufficient knowledge and skills, each assessor is provided with an assessment scope. This scope reflects the assessor’s experience and qualifications and determines which unit or skill standards they are permitted to assess for EarnLearn learners.
Assessor scope is granted based on NZQA Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMRs): These requirements ensure all assessors meet consistent criteria, supporting consistency in assessment practice across providers. EarnLearn applies the relevant CMR requirements when registering assessors.
Assessors play a crucial role in EarnLearn’s workplace training model. If you’re interested in supporting learners, reviewing evidence, and contributing to assessment quality, explore what’s involved in becoming an EarnLearn assessor.
Moderators ensure assessment is consistent, fair, and aligned with national standards. If you’re experienced in assessment and want to support quality assurance across programmes, find out what it means to be an EarnLearn moderator.

Academic misconduct occurs when a learner submits work that isn’t their own. EarnLearn takes this seriously, and assessors play a key role in upholding integrity. If misconduct is suspected, assessors must contact the Quality Assurance team so a fair, transparent investigation can take place.
Learners can formally appeal an assessment decision if they believe it is unfair. Assessors must use a transparent assessment process that provides a clear trail of evidence to support their decisions.
The learner must appeal in writing within 30 days of receiving their assessment result.
The EarnLearn Quality Assurance team oversees a formal review of the appeal.
We inform the learner and the assessor of the outcome within 15 days of receiving the appeal.
Complete the Assessment Appeals Form.
