EarnLearn Assessor Role

Assessors are essential to maintaining the quality and integrity of EarnLearn’s workplace training model. As a registered assessor, you play a critical role in supporting learners, reviewing evidence of competence, and ensuring assessments are consistent with national standards. Your expertise gives employers confidence that learners are progressing safely, effectively, and in line with industry expectations.

Assessors contribute to a high-quality, compliant system that strengthens New Zealand’s workforce and supports learners to complete their qualifications.

Role Overview

Assessors are responsible for confirming whether a learner has met the requirements of each standard. This involves:

  • Reviewing learner evidence across written assessments, workplace tasks, and verifier reports
  • Applying consistent judgement based on national standards
  • Providing clear guidance and feedback to support progress
  • Ensuring assessments are fair, transparent, and well documented

What’s Required

To remain active as an EarnLearn assessor, you must:

  • Complete at least one assessment each year
  • Participate in assessor forums or development sessions
  • Meet all moderation and quality assurance requirements

Becoming an Assessor

To register:

  1. Confirm your organisation has EarnLearn learners with active Training Agreements
  2. Download and complete the Assessor Application Form
  3. Email your form to qa@waiouru.earnlearn.ac.nz
  4. Complete a short induction once your application is approved

EarnLearn provides ongoing support to help you carry out your role effectively:

  • Induction covering Moodle access, marking, and reporting
  • Clear assessment guidance and resources
  • Regular assessor forums and updates
  • Moderation support to maintain assessment quality
  • A responsive QA team available for questions anytime

Assessor Courses

EarnLearn offers nationally recognised assessment and moderation training, including 4098, 4098 Trades, 11551, and 11552. These courses build the skills assessors need to assess consistently, moderate effectively, and support high-quality workplace training.

Assessor’s Role

Assessors play a key role in supporting learners throughout the training and assessment process.

Reviewing evidence of competence

Assessors review all evidence from the learner and the verifier and decide whether the learner is competent to meet the standard. Evidence typically includes:

  • Learners’ written or online assessment responses
  • Workplace documents and records
  • Verification from supervisors or managers

Ongoing assessor responsibilities

To remain registered with EarnLearn, assessors must:

  • Remain active by assessing annually
  • Participate in assessor forums or events
  • Meet all moderation and quality assurance requirements

To register as an EarnLearn assessor, your workplace or organisation must:

  • Have learners who hold Training Agreements with EarnLearn, and
  • Offer programmes that support the workplace assessment model.

2 Submit your application

To apply to become an EarnLearn assessor:

  1. Download and complete the Assessor Application Form.

  2. Email your completed form to: qa@waiouru.earnlearn.ac.nz

3 Induction and access

Once your application has been successfully processed, we will:

  • Contact you to complete a short induction session, and

  • Send you login details to access EarnLearn-approved learning and assessment resources.

What Support Can Assessors Expect?

Our team is here to support registered assessors in a range of ways, from initial onboarding through to ongoing professional development.

Induction and onboarding

New assessors receive induction and onboarding that covers:

  • How to access and engage with learners on Moodle, the EarnLearn Learning Management System (LMS)

  • Guidance on assessing and marking, expected timeframes, and how to record feedback and notes

  • Administration requirements, including how and when results should be reported

  • Quality assurance (moderation) requirements

Ongoing development

We run regular assessor forums and events. Registered assessors receive invitations and are encouraged to attend. Forums are a great way to:

  • Stay up to date with programme and industry changes

  • Connect with other assessors and industry representatives

  • Refresh and strengthen assessment practice
