Your role as an employer

Three simple ways to set crane apprentices up to succeed on site and progress through strands faster.

Rotate apprentices through tasks that match your plant and chosen strand(s)—pre-use checks, slinging & signalling, lifts under supervision, basic maintenance, and documentation. Exposure might include overhead (cab/pendant), truck loader, self-erecting tower, or site dogman work.

Demonstrate once, supervise closely, and sign off competencies. Small wins daily build safe, confident operators.

Allow time for on-job evidence and theory. Apprentices complete strands within the New Zealand Certificates in Cranes (Level 3 then Level 4). Your support with scheduling assessments and providing suitable lifting scenarios keeps progress moving.

Need specific units to meet site or ACOP requirements? Use casual credits to up-skill in targeted areas.

Provide PPE and maintain equipment; emphasise lifting plans, clear comms, and pre-start checks. Encourage questions and stop-work for hazards. Keep tags/inspections current and document handovers.

A strong safety culture keeps apprentices engaged, protects people and plant, and lifts quality on every job.

How the cranes apprenticeship works

1

Connect & choose strands

Already have someone ready, or need help? We’ll confirm eligibility and the right pathway through Level 3 to Level 4 strands that fit your operation (e.g., Dogman, Overhead, Truck Loader, Self-erecting Tower → Mobile, Crawler, Tower, etc.).

2

Training agreement & onboarding

We set up the EarnLearn training agreement and induction. You organise PPE and site onboarding; we align expectations and get assessment started so learning can begin on the job.

3

On-the-job learning

Apprentices work under your supervision on real tasks: pre-use checks, slinging & signalling, basic lifts under direction, documentation, and equipment care, matched to your plant and chosen strands.

4

Theory & assessment

They complete theory and assessments alongside on-job evidence. Need specific units to meet site or ACOP requirements? Use casual credits to up-skill in targeted areas.

5

Ongoing support

Your EarnLearn Account Manager checks in regularly, helps with evidence and sign-offs, and keeps progress moving from Level 3 into Level 4 specialisations.
